Prambanan Temple Compound

Prambanan rises from the Javanese plain as a forest of stone spires, the tallest reaching 47 meters into the sky. Built in the 9th century, the compound holds 240 individual temples arranged in precise geometric order. The volcanic stone glows amber at sunrise and deepens to charcoal as afternoon storms roll in from the mountains.

This is the largest Hindu temple complex in Southeast Asia, dedicated to the Trimurti — Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. The bas-relief carvings along the temple walls tell the entire Ramayana epic in stone, panel by panel, with a detail that rewards slow looking.
