Sultan Ahmed Mosque in Istanbul

The Sultan Ahmed Mosque rises over Istanbul's historic peninsula with six slender minarets. Its silhouette is a cascade of domes, each one smaller than the last. Inside, more than 20,000 hand-painted Iznik tiles coat the walls in deep cobalt and white.

Completed in 1616, it is one of the few structures of its kind in the world with six minarets. Light enters through 260 windows, shifting across the tiled interior at different hours of the day. That slow play of blue light on ancient tile is something you carry with you long after you leave.
