Ruins of St. Paul's

The Ruins of St. Paul's rise above Macau as a carved stone facade and grand stairway. The wall is all that remains of the Church of Mater Dei. Its grey granite surface carries saints, ships, flowers, Chinese characters, and sea symbols.

Built between 1602 and 1640, it survived the 1835 fire that erased most of the complex. Visitors come for the rare mix of European church design and Asian craft. It feels less like a ruin than a memory Macau chose to keep standing.
