Jonker Street

Jonker Street runs through Melaka's old Chinatown, where narrow shophouses line a lively road. Painted shutters, red lanterns, temple roofs, and food carts fill the street with color.

A Famosa Fort

A Famosa Fort stands as a weathered stone gate at the foot of a green hill. Its thick laterite walls carry cannon marks, salt air, and centuries of pressure. The site feels spare, exposed, and direct, with Malacca’s colonial past in plain view.

Built by the Portuguese in 1511, it is among Southeast Asia’s oldest European remains. Visitors come for the Porta de Santiago, the last surviving gate of a larger fortress. Its power is quiet, because so little remains and still says so much.
