Red Square

Red Square is a vast cobblestone expanse at the heart of Moscow. On one end stands Saint Basil's Cathedral, its nine painted domes rising in sharp geometric forms. The Kremlin's red brick walls run along the western edge, ancient and imposing. Even on quiet mornings, the square carries a weight of history that is almost physical.

For centuries, this square has been the stage for coronations, proclamations, and national celebrations. The Lenin Mausoleum sits here in granite silence, unchanged since 1924. GUM's glass arcade anchors the eastern side, a contrast of imperial elegance and everyday life. At dusk, with the cathedral lit and the Kremlin walls glowing, history feels close enough to touch.

Saint Basil's Cathedral

Saint Basil's Cathedral rises from Red Square in a burst of onion domes, each one painted in spiraling reds, greens, golds, and whites. Built between 1555 and 1561 under Ivan the Terrible, it stands as one of the most recognizable silhouettes on earth. Up close, the asymmetry is deliberate and disorienting in the best way — no two towers are identical.

What makes it extraordinary is that the exterior spectacle is matched by an intimate interior: nine small chapels connected by narrow, fresco-covered corridors that feel almost medieval in scale. The building was never meant to be a grand hall — it was built to overwhelm from the outside and humble you within. Standing in Red Square at dusk, with the Kremlin wall to your left and this cathedral ahead, you understand why Moscow considers it the center of everything.
