Janganmun Gate

Janganmun Gate rises as a massive stone and timber portal on the northern edge of Suwon's historic walls. A curved brick wall wraps around the front, protecting the tall wooden pavilion painted in bright traditional colors. Local traffic flows around the ancient structure, blending historic architecture with the rhythm of modern city life.

Unlike other Korean gates, this structure features a unique outer wall designed to trap and repel attackers. Visitors walk along the stone battlements to examine the heavy wooden doors and look out over the streets. Standing under the painted roof at sunset connects you directly to the builders of the Joseon dynasty.

Hwahongmun Gate

A stone bridge spanning a quiet stream features seven arched water gates and a wooden pavilion. Cool spray rises from the rushing water below the white stone arches. Traditional tiled roofs curve upward against the sky, casting shadows over the flowing river.

This structure served as the northern floodgate of the historic Hwaseong Fortress wall. Visitors gather here at night to see the warm lights illuminating the stone arches. The soft sound of rushing water brings a sense of peace to the ancient fortress.
