Food & Water Safety

What to know before drinking water, eating street food, or dining out.

  • Bottled water is the default choice outside high-end hotels and restaurants.
  • Chicken, seafood, rice dishes, mezze, dates, and fresh juices are dependable orders.
  • In traditional markets, choose busy counters with high turnover and visible grilling or cooking.
  • Heat spoils food quickly; avoid cut fruit or dairy left in open-air displays.
๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ

Safety & Scams

Common scams and safety precautions during your stay.

  • Violent crime is uncommon in major travel areas; driving standards are the bigger daily risk.
  • Use Careem, Uber, hotel cars, or metered taxis rather than curbside negotiation.
  • At heritage markets, agree on prices before accepting tailoring, incense, or guided shopping help.
  • Keep passport photos and visa copies on your phone; hotels and some checkpoints may request ID.
๐Ÿ™

Local Etiquette

Respectful behavior for temples, neighborhoods, and restaurants.

  • Dress cleanly and modestly in public; lightweight long layers work best.
  • Public affection reads badly; keep greetings formal unless locals set a warmer tone.
  • Accept coffee or dates with the right hand, and pace yourself because refills are generous.
  • Ask before photographing people, homes, guards, government buildings, or private compounds.
๐Ÿ”Œ

Power Plugs

Plugs, voltage, and electrical charging standards.

Common plug types

Type G is standard; Type A, B, and C may appear in older properties.

๐Ÿ’ต

Tipping Culture

Tipping customs for dining, taxis, and services.

  • Restaurants may add service, but 10% is still appreciated for sharp service.
  • Round up rideshare and taxi fares when drivers handle luggage or wait patiently.
  • Hotel porters usually receive 10 to 20 SAR per bag in premium properties.
  • Guides and drivers expect more for full-day private work than short transfers.
๐Ÿ“‹

Local Rules

Essential local laws and regulations to respect.

  • Alcohol possession and public intoxication can create serious legal trouble.
  • Do not fly drones without formal approval.
  • Avoid political commentary, filming security sites, or arguing with officials.
  • Public behavior is conservative; loud late-night street conduct attracts attention fast.
๐Ÿงด

Health Precautions

Health advice for climate, insects, and well-being.

  • Summer heat is severe; schedule outdoor work before 10:00 or after sunset.
  • Carry electrolytes on desert drives and do not rely on remote fuel stops for supplies.
  • Use high SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat even in winter.
  • Private hospitals are strong in major cities, but travel insurance should include evacuation cover.
